One need only glance at the daily news headlines to understand that we live in a
highly dysfunctional society. Every kind of crime imaginable takes place on a daily
basis, not just in big cities, but all over rural America as well. Our streets are
not safe to walk on. Our schools are frequently in the headlines as places of violent
attacks. Children are abused by their parents, the very people they should be able
to trust without question. A report of child abuse is made every ten seconds in
the United States. More than four children die every day as a result of child abuse.
Domestic violence against women is rampant. More than one million women a year seek
medical help for injuries that result from battering. Drug and alcohol abuse affects
families at every level of society. Every night in America thousands of people go
to bed hungry and without adequate shelter.
Twenty-six percent of Americans have a diagnosable mental illness. Mental disorders
are the leading cause of disability in the United States and Canada. Quite often
people suffer from more than one mental disorder at the same time. Nearly half of
the people who have a mental disorder meet the criteria for two or more disorders.
Many mental health issues have their roots in childhood. Children suffer problems
that go undiagnosed, and these problems grow to become diagnosable disorders. The
current school system does little to address this kind of problem. With constantly
increasing pressure to meet academic standards, there is little time for notice
to be taken of a child’s emotional well-being.
We believe that all of these problems are merely symptoms of the root causes. The
problem of social dysfunction in society is analogous to a tree. The roots of a
tree go deep into the ground, and the tree cannot live without their support. The
roots of social dysfunction are the same. Instead of trying to diagnose problems
at the root level, all our nation's attention and financial resources are being
directed to the leaves and branches of this tree, which are only the symptoms of
the deeper problem.
Free World U was created, not just to be another school, but to serve as the most
direct and effective method of attacking the root causes that we can imagine. We
believe that by changing the way children are educated, we can make fundamental
changes that will improve society as a whole.
The delivery system used by most schools is inefficient. The curriculum is not relevant
to the life a student will live when he leaves school. A pre K-12 program that addresses
pertinent issues and teaches students more than just the expected academic courses
is needed to begin to cut away the diseased roots that are causing problems in our
society today.
At Free World U we are making inroads into these issues. We have developed a delivery
system that makes it possible for students to learn up to seven times faster than
conventional means. This gives students more time to learn things that are not normally
taught in schools. Our curriculum is constantly evolving and being expanded to include
information that will help our students become intelligent, socially aware, and
emotionally stable members of society. We believe that this, above all else, will
begin the process of repairing the root causes of social dysfunction.
