Welcome to Free World U

We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit online school offering our students a complete preschool through 12th grade curriculum. Our proven patent-pending program is supported by research that shows that children can learn faster and enjoy learning more using our methods. The curriculum is taught via flashcards that break subjects down into small, easily assimilated fact units. The flashcards are presented through a program that remembers what each student has learned and what he or she needs to keep working on.
We have more than 47,950 registered users in 130 countries. You can use this program at times that fit your life.

Register by clicking on the link at the top right of the page. View the tutorials, and choose a grade level and subject by clicking "Flashcard Index" on the menu.

Begin using the flashcards. Our flashcards are used as a learning tool, designed to make the child wonder about the answer. There is no need to write the answer down. Track your progress quickly and easily by clicking on the "Show Statistics" link on the lower left of each flashcard.

Comply with legal issues. Find out what you need to do to meet local legal requirements for homeschooling.

At Free World U, students may work at any time, day or night, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. There are no classes to attend and no books to buy. The student / teacher relationship is individualized with one-to-one interaction.

The Free World U program includes writing evaluation, certified teachers, objective assessments, a progress dashboard, transcripts, administrative reports, certificates of completion - and a high school diploma.

As always, Free World U is available anytime and anywhere an Internet connection is accessible.

Back to Basics with Free World U

Do you know what these have in common?

  • Wrote two violin concertos
  • Shares patents on the world's first artificial pancreas
  • Achieved Board Certified in Psychiatry
  • Honored with inclusion in both Who's Who in the West and Who's Who in California

Have you determined the answer? These are just a few of the accomplishments of Free World U's founder, Dr. David A. Hall. (And yes, we view creating a school as a pretty impressive accomplishment as well!)

I don’t know what we would do without Free world U. Your site has given us the ultimate homeschool resource!
I don't know what we would do without Free World U. Your site has given us the ultimate homeschool resource! My daughter loves the flashcards, we can move at our own pace, and most of all she is LEARNING!! We are working at the 8th grade level, but we use information from almost every grade level and subject to enhance whatever it may be that we are studying, Thank you so much for your work and dedication, and please know, it is very, very much appreciated and is making a difference in our lives. I have told every homeschool family I know about this site and have passed it along to public and private school teachers as well. Thanks again from the bottom of our hearts, the difference you are making in my daughter's education is beyond words

I tell everyone I know about it. This is an incredible resource and it will change the world! I put it in the same category as World Book and Britannica, maybe even better. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

There's a Disconnect

When asked about his motivation for creating Free World U, Dr. Hall states:
Ever since I graduated from college, I have noticed an extreme disconnect between the curriculum of the schooling that I experienced and the needs in real-life. For example, dating, relationships, marriage and family, the world of finance, critical thinking, manners, health and wellness, interpersonal relationships, and career choice were simply not addressed, as if they did not exist. The academic world was so focused on the core subjects that it disregarded this disconnect. It was as if education was unnecessary for these subjects and by some form of magic you were supposed to learn these life skills on your own. Since this time I have spoken to numerous people about this and have found a very high percentage of agreement. Regardless of whether they enjoyed their schooling or not, most agree that they have used little of what they learned in school and were taught little of what they really needed to know in life.

How the Emphasis in Education Changed

On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched a device which they named Sputnik 1 into orbit in space, beating the U.S. in the race to place an artificial satellite into Earth's orbit. One outcome of this was that our government educational system was blamed for lack of toughness in science and mathematics. The emphasis on standardized testing and its effect on classroom teaching gradually began to change education. Almost 60 years after the launch of Sputnik 1, America's education system is still (and arguably even more) focused on standardized testing and core academic subjects. Teachers were told by their superiors to teach to the test if the government paid their bills. In kindergarten through 12th grade, reading, science, and math have been given so much importance in public schools, that there is little time for anything else. The logic behind this action is greatly flawed. It damages both the individual and the nation. Now, when people graduate from traditional public schools, even after college, they have to create what amounts to their own school in order to adapt to the real world. This is a huge problem for the student, now a young adult, unprepared for real life.

Our Mission

It is within our mission to create a school that addresses the problems that the student is most likely to face in the real world using a student centered model rather than a state centered model.

There are no scheduled events. This enables you to learn on your own time. You can take vacations as you wish. We will interview you at the outset to get acquainted and determine your unique interests, but you will have the last word regarding what you study. We offer independent study in almost any subject for credit.

Our Method

Our unique method of learning has been proven through independent research to be on average seven times faster than traditional classroom learning. There are no textbooks. Everything has been reduced to its smallest possible units and then divided into a question and answer format presented on electronic flashcards. As you learn, you eliminate the flashcards until no more exist. We can send you a very detailed daily progress report on what has transpired so that this entire process is transparent.

If you wish, you can start your own business before you graduate. You can design your own life and set your own financial and social goals. By the end of the 12th grade, you will likely be more ready to tackle the world.

The decision to go to college is filled with controversy. One of the greatest gifts that we can give to children is to help them distinguish between facts and opinions, particularly in critical areas of their lives. We will assume that you will probably change your mind multiple times through your journey. We put the student and his family in charge. We offer courses in the decision to go to college and present all sides of the question.

What We Offer

We offer algebra, geometry, and science in every grade starting with kindergarten. It begins at a very elementary level. Depending on your career choices, by the fourth grade you will probably have all that you are likely to need. We do offer it in every grade as an option. The instructional programs in every grade from kindergarten to grade 12 are offered to all full-time students.

When I was in school I loved science, but the science that I was forced to take went far beyond what was fun or useful. I went to a very elite private college but it was subsidized by the government and that strongly influenced the curriculum. All charter schools are government-sponsored and therefore the curriculum is controlled by the government. You cannot serve two masters.

Critical Thinking

Hypnosis is a phenomenon that is not limited to a hypnotist’s office. Whenever you hear something over and over by people that you trust, there is a significant probability that this message will bypass your critical mind and that you will believe it. Whole nations experienced this, particularly during world wars. It’s the most compelling reason for studying history. It’s generally referred to as propaganda. The classroom is a fertile environment for this process and when the message sticks it frequently persists for life. I know people who believe that they use advanced algebra every day and when I ask them to explain it, I get an answer that is complete nonsense. We recommend taking critical thinking as early as possible in order to avoid accepting propaganda as fact.

A bit about my background. After graduating from a four-year college with a degree in chemistry, I entered USC medical school for four years, then took a one-year rotating internship from Huntington Memorial Hospital and then took a three-year psychiatric residency from the Los Angeles County USC Medical Center. After two years of private practice I was eligible to take the board examinations in psychiatry and neurology which I was able to pass the first time around with the help of 3000 homemade flashcards. I was struck by the fact that the entire model of education shifted 180° to a student centered program when I began my psychiatric residency. I spent the last 15 years developing this school with the help of a very talented handpicked staff.

The dogmas of the quiet past, are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise -- with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew, and act anew. We must disenthrall ourselves, and then we shall save our country.
- Abraham Lincoln

This quote revolves around the central word disenthrall. I strongly recommend doing a search for this word and studying the various meanings. Because it is quite complex, it will take a little time. It will be time well spent.
